Advisory
U-Prep students will be organized into groups for daily Advisory Periods to continue the important work of developing character and organizing service learning activities that benefit our city. The U-Prep faculty will serve as student mentors and service learning coordinators for their groups. Empathy for one another. Courage to share.
Daily Schedule
The U-Prep school day will start at 7:30 am and conclude at 4:45 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The school day will start at 7:30 am and conclude at 2:30 pm on Wednesdays. School will also be held on 2 Saturdays a month from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. We strive for excellence on every task every day. Learning communities are built one day at a time.
School Calendar
The U-Prep school year began on August 10, 2009 with the "Summer Prep." This introductory summer month at U-Prep was spent on university campuses, at team-building camps and in the classroom. The school year will conclude on June 4, 2010. There are no shortcuts in achieving excellence.
Uniforms
Students will be required to wear their KIPP University Prep High School polo shirts and khaki pants during regular school hours except for special events or school spirit days. Shirts will be tucked in and belts must be worn. Only a KIPP or U-Prep sweatshirt may be worn during school hours for additional layering. The U-Prep uniform will be earned during Prep Summer. U-Prep athletic uniforms will be worn for physical activities. Excellence in every detail. We are a community of learners.
Service Learning
An essential part of moral development and curricular programming will be service learning. Part of the mission of our school is to positively impact the communities in which we live. U-Prep students will work with students from the Keystone School to outline a plan for service and then initiate their plans on select school days. Courage to serve. Service rooted in empathy.
College Connections
U-Prep students will make frequent visits to college campuses in San Antonio during the year, and they will have opportunities to visit out of area sites as well. Courage to excel in a new environment.
End of Year Trips
Students who achieve the grade and behavior requirements will qualify for exciting end of the year trips. These trips will be multi-day educational excursions to destinations outside of the central Texas region. Our first trip, scheduled for June, is a white-water rafting trip in Central Colorado.
Internships
As part of the KIPP University Prep graduation requirements, students must complete 1 professional internship. Starting in the summer of 10th grade students will be placed in professional settings that both match their interests and are conducive to the U-Prep schedule. Excellent preparation for college. Excellent preparation for life.
Mentoring
Along with the guiding relationships students will have with their teachers, all U-Prep students will be paired with a mentor from the community. The purpose is to expose U-Prep scholars to a wide network of San Antonio professionals and provide them with college and career advice. Character strengthened through the collective wisdom of our community. Wisdom for life.
Sports & Wellness
An integral part of providing the very best college preparation for our students is helping achieve a balance of physical activity and proper nutrition. At U-Prep we will not only offer Physical Education courses but a range of extracurricular sports including cross country, karate, dance, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track. Breakfast, lunch and snack will be served to students in order to provide fuel for the rigorous academic and athletic schedules. Courage to compete. Excellence in balance.
Student Engagement
Preparing U-Prep students to excel in college as independent thinkers means giving opportunities for self-determination. For this reason, most of the student social activities (dances, spirit days, special events, etc.) will be initiated and planned by the teacher sponsored student government association. Wisdom forged in experience. Our decisions strengthen our community.
