KIPPin' it Green

The KIPP University Prep Garden Club

The KIPPin’ it Green Garden Club, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of San Antonio at The Dominion, have partnered to create our garden.  Our goals are to:

  • Grow a successful organic garden based on the book “Lasagna Gardening” by Patricia Lanza
  • Introduce students & parents to a nutritional lifestyle
  • Produce a KIPP cookbook
  • Host a family dinner at the end of year with items grown from the garden
  • Eventually become a Farmer’s Market for the local community

Success with KIPPin' It Green

KIPPin' it Green Garden Club is happy to enjoy the fruits of labor.  Students since April have been involved in weeding, water, identifying & removing pest and as a result the Garden is looking great!  Things that have sprouted include okra, watermelon, peppers & eggplant.  Students and teachers volunteered their time over the summer to maintain the garden and to prepare for the fall. We would like to thank The Dominion Rotary Club for their support and looking forward to growing more items in the fall of 2010.

Goals for Next Year: KIPPin It Green Recipe Book & Farmer's Market.

Next Project Date Set for Saturday, March 27

This Saturday will involve planting, planting, planting!  We have a bunch of vegetables and herbs to get into the ground on this date so we hope you'll want to come out and help.  We will meet at KIPP University Prep High School on Saturday and start around 9:00am so, please come out! Thank you in advance!

Next Project Date Set for Saturday, February 20

This Saturday will involve filling the beds. One of the layers requires old newspaper and  KIPPin’ it Green needs your help! We would like for you to donate old newspaper stashed away in your house and/or classroom. If you are able to donate, please let me know and I will arrange a time sometime on Friday to pick up the recycled paper.  We will meet at KIPP University Prep High School on Saturday and start around 9:00am so, please come out! Thank you in advance!

KIPPin' it Green Launched!

February 6, 2010

30+ KIPP University Prep students gathered on Saturday February 6th to launch the KIPPin' it Green garden club.   We were able to create the six raised beds that will be used for growing the vegetables.  The next major step in the project is filling the beds with organic dirt and compost.  Following this, we will plant the vegetables.  Stay tuned as the project unfolds!

Many thanks go to Friends of KIPP Barbara Richmond and Valerie Katz.  These energetic supporters created the garden plan, raised money from the Rotary Club of San Antonio at the Dominion and hauled lumber throughout the day.  Without their help and support, our garden would not be possible.

Plus, there are lots more photos here!

Our next project dates are Saturday, Feburary 20, 2010 and Saturday, Feburary 27, 2010.

If you would like to participate or have any questions, please contact Ms. Chéla Wallace at cwallace@kippsa.org or 210-393-4833
