Highly Qualified Teachers
The federal education law, known as No Child Left Behind, requires that all teachers of core subjects in all public schools must be highly qualified, meaning that at a minimum, they hold a bachelor's degree and have passed state mandated subject area competency tests in the subject area they are teaching.
Core subjects identified by NCLB include reading/language arts, math, civics and government, economics, geography, science, history, fine arts (music, art, dance and theater), and international languages.
In Texas, districts must report the number of highly qualified teachers to the Texas Education Agency at the beginning of each school year. At KIPP San Antonio, 100 percent of teachers meet the state highly qualified requirements.
