Special Announcement to KIPP SENIOR Alum
If you are now a SENIOR it's time to make an appointment with me and/or your high school counselor to go over your college options. In October you will need to apply for your FAFSA PIN. This means that your parents will need to find their tax returns along with several other documents to apply for the FAFSA PIN. If you are undocumented, you will need to apply for the TASFA which will provide you with citizenship to attend college and you can get up to $5,000 in grant money. There are some qualifiers for the FAFSA and the TASFA. To get information about either the FAFSA or TASFA check out our website at KIPPSA.ORG, then the KIPPthroughCollege main page and select the Quick Links. You should narrow down your college selections to 3, and you should make application to these colleges in November or December. If you are still undecided about what college you should attend, consider visiting the colleges you are interested in either in person or by internet. You can get quite a bit of information and view a lot of the college campuses over the net. If you are interested in local area colleges i.e. San Antonio, Austin, Houston areas I will be glad to take you to these schools, time permitting! I will also be happy to assist you with understanding the FAFSA or the TASFA. Seniors and senior parents, the clock is ticking loudly! Getting into college will take a lot of scheduling and work on your part so be ready to do what it takes! I have gone through the college application and finance pieces several times with my own children and I know it can fun or frustrating! To help you understand the timing and necessary steps you must take, I will be hosting several seminars throughout the school year that will focus on college application and finance. I highly recommend that you attend at least one of these seminars and come prepared to take notes! If you are interested in attending a seminar now, please let me know by email at joboubel@kippsa.org. Seniors, I am here to help you get into and through college please do not hesitate to ask for assistance! We at KIPP San Antonio want to keep our promise of getting you into college, and I want to make sure you graduate from college!
Special Announcement for KIPP JUNIOR Alum
If you are now a JUNIOR it's time for you to take the steps necessary to get you prepared for college. There are tests that you need to take which colleges will use to determine your eligibility to attend their school and the level of financial assistance they will provide you. The two well known tests are the SAT and the ACT. If you are going to take the SAT, I suggest that you take the PSAT test first! The PSAT is a "practice" test for the SAT. This score you obtain on the PSAT is not used by the colleges but is meant to help you see how well prepared you are for the SAT. Should you not score high enough to qualify for the college(s) you have chosen, you can take a SAT prep course that will help get the scores up! Of course you have to attend the classes, study hard, and follow the instructors teaching. In my opinion, the only reason you should NOT take an SAT prep course is if you reached your goals on each of the subject tests of the PSAT. You can also take the ACT! The option to take a prep course for the ACT is also available and my eariler advise applies here as well. By the way, it's best to take the PSAT or PSAT prep course in September or October. If you take the SAT in October you should get your results by December. If you miss the October SAT test don't worry, the SAT test is administered several times throughout the year. By the way, if you take the SAT and didn't reach your scoring goal(s), you can re-take the test. The college admissions counselors will use the higher scoring results. You may have a lot of colleges you are interested in and that's great! But I recommend that you now narrow down your college choices to 5. Now is the time to make an appoitment with me and/or your high school counselor to go over your college optioins and possible summer programs that can help you get into the college of choice. You should also be attending college fairs and visiting colleges that you are interested in attending. Sometime in DecemberJanuaray you should schedule another meeting with me and/or your high school counselor to go over the results of your SAT and/or ACT test. If you have not done so, you should get started on your college resume and essay. It will be much easier to create these items when things are fresh in your mind and you not under the stress of the collge application and finace pieces. You will need a qualified person to review and make suggestion on each of these for you. To help you understand the timing and necessary steps you must take to get ready for college, I will be hosting several seminars throughout the school year. I highly recommend that you and your parents attend at least one of these seminars and come prepared to take notes! If you are interested in attending a seminar now, please let me know by email at joboubel@kippsa.org. Juniors, I am here to help you get into and through college please do not hesitate to ask for assistance! We at KIPP San Antonio want to keep our promise of getting you into college, and I want to make sure you graduate from college!
